Club Med pro named top teacher

By Bill Hilbig

Fittingly, the call came while Marie-Claire De Bortoli was on the golf course.

The director of the International Golf Academy at Club Med Sandpiper in Port St. Lucie was spending her birthday playing a few holes with her father, Louis, who was visiting from France.

De Bortoli was halfway expecting Patti Benson's call. Benson, president of the 1,200-member strong LPGA Teaching and Club Professionals, was offering congratulations. After all, De Bortoli just recently had been named the LPGA T&CP Teacher of the Year for the Southeast Section, which encompasses seven states.

But Benson had even better news. De Bortoli had just been selected Teacher of the Year for the entire country.

"That really floored me," De Bortoli said. "I just felt honored to win the national award. And to be told about it on my birthday and with my 85-year-old father here with me, wow, what a great day."

De Bortoli, a native of Aix en Provence, France, came to America 22 years ago when her husband, Sylvio, was put in charge of all Club Med properties in the United States. The first stop was Phoenix, but the family — including daughters Flavia and Olivia — moved to Port St. Lucie in 1994.

Before becoming a golf pro, De Bortoli spent 20 years as a ski instructor, working with both snow and water skiers. Nowadays, she not only works with all types of golfers — men, women, juniors, seniors, players with disabilities — as an LPGA Class A instructor, she also serves as LPGA T&CP National Evaluator, or a grader other golf instructors.

Still, teaching is her passion.

"I love teaching," she said. "Even before I became a golf teacher, I taught skiing for 20 years. So, making the switch from skiing to golf wasn't all that hard."

And the key to being an outstanding teacher?

"Communications," she said. "You have to listen to your students and teach them the things they want to learn and not what you think they should learn."
